Love Letters to my Father:
Hidden in a Barn for 70 Years

In 2006, I inherited from my paternal aunt Hazel Jane Campbell Byargeon her house, property, and belongings, located on her parents’ cotton farm property in Oak Grove, Louisiana.  In the barn were trunks of memorabilia from several of her deceased brothers containing their old private photos, letters, documents, and keepsakes. There was a box in one trunk containing my father’s personal correspondence from family and friends during the 1930s.  I finally got around to reading them during Pandemic Summer 2020. Among these were perfumed letters from young women written during 1930-1931, when he was 18 years old. These heartbreaking letters reveal their emotional and physical attraction to him.

After reading these letters, all I have to say about my father, “Johnny, I hardly knew you!
